Balbriggan CC were the stand out winners at tonight’s Balbriggan Town Awards.
The Comenius Team led by teachers Mr Pierce, Ms O’Brien, Ms Grant and Mr Kelly won the ‘Best Culture Group Award’ . The Comenius Team took part in an international exchange project with schools in Germany, Italy and Finland which centred around a theme of humour. The partnerships help students and teachers to acquire and improve skills not only in the subject area on which the project is focussed, but also in teamwork, social relations, planning and undertaking project activities and using information and communication technologies (ICT). Working with schools from different countries also gives pupils and teachers the opportunity to practice foreign languages and increases their motivation towards language learning.
The Formula 1 In Schools Team of Liam Kavanagh, Dylan Tucker, Gary Tiscovski, Kasper Kencler and led by teacher Mr. Conroy and Mr. Harding won the ‘Community Achievement Award’ for their outstanding Project. F1 in Schools™ is a global multi-disciplinary competition that challenges secondary school students to design, build and race miniature compressed-air powered balsa wood Formula One™ cars.
The competition inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture,
branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and
apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.
Other Award winners on the night included 5th Year Student Ross Staunton won the ‘The Franny Hogan Memorial Youth Sport Award’ and former student Ben Marry for his Artistic Contribution. Ben is still involved in the school community, helping out with his media contribution.
Well done to all award winners
